Pedestrian Struck Sends 1 to Trauma Center
Sunday, August 22, 2010 01:23
-
As East Whiteland members started winding down a busy day involving a Working Housefire, a fall with a flight, and numerous ambulance calls, tones dropped again at 01:23 hrs (1:23 am) for Station 5 and Medic 4 (Malvern) for an accident with a reported Pedestrian Struck. Within minutes, Deputy 5 (J. Brown) Ambulance 5-2, Squad 5, and Medic 4-1 made their responses. Deputy 5 arrived on location in front of Aspen Lane and Lancaster Ave. and advised of 1 subject down in the roadway, hit by a car. He immediately requested an Aero medical Helicopter to the scene.

Squad 5 secured a landing zone (LZ) for Skycare Helicopter and brought the flight crew to the scene.

Due to deteriorating weather conditions, Skycare was unable to make the flight to a City Trauma Center, forcing Ambulance 5-2 to ground transport the patient with Medic 4-1 and the flight crew to Crozer Chester Medical Center’s Trauma Center.

Fire Police Assisted with traffic and crowd control around the accident scene.

Working House Fire in First Due - House Saved
Saturday, August 21, 2010 14:42
-

At 14:41 hrs (2:41 pm), St. 5 along with St. 4 (Malvern) for Ladder 4 and Engine 4-5 and St. 56 (Goshen) for Engine 56 were dispatched to Rodgers Way for a reported house fire. Within moments, Engine 5-3 and Ladder 4 made their responses.

Engine 5-3 with Lt. 5 (B. Humphreys) arrived on location and advised of a 2 ½ story Single Family Dwelling with smoke showing from the roofline. A “Working Fire Dispatch” was requested to bring additional resources to the scene, adding Ladder 56, Rescue 2 (Berwyn) for the Rapid Intervention Team, and St. 67 (Phoenixville) for MICU 67.  Engine 5-3 also established “Rodgers Way Command.”

The crew from Engine 5-3 made entry into the house and made an aggressive attack on the fire in the kitchen, living room, and dining room. The crew from Ladder 4 assisted with ventilation and ground ladders, and advanced a second attack line to the second floor of the residence to check for fire extension.

Due to the amount of supply hose laid and hydrant locations on Rt. 352, a Fire Police Task Force was called brining Fire Police officers from the surrounding departments to assist with traffic control and mitigation around the fire ground.

Thanks to the rapid response and aggressive attack from firefighters, and with the help of a burst water pipe acting like a sprinkler, the fire was contained sparing the rest of the house from a potentially devastating fire.

Thanks to all our mutual aid companies for assisting, and special thanks to Montco St. 47 (King of Prussia) for covering our local while we were operating on the fire ground, and for assisting with clean up after the fire.

All apparatus was taken up and available by 16:56 hrs (4:56 pm).

Members Stay Current and Cool by Drilling on Water Related Emergancies
Monday, July 26, 2010
-
As April showers bring May flowers, summer heat brings people to the pool. And with many private residential and commercial pools dotting our response area, the chance for a water and pool related emergency significantly rises. To better prepare for these kind of summer related emergencies, members of St. 5 spent a fun and educational Monday evening learning about the different types of hazards and emergencies they could encounter, and how to respond to these various unusual types of calls.

First responders spent the first part of the evening going over classroom material, such as identifying risks to oneself and victims, the different types of drownings, hazards, pre-planning for and response to water and pool emergencies. The material covered flooding and basic swift water found in the Water Rescue Awareness class, and also more specific pool related information frequently found in specialty and life guarding classes.

The second portion of the evening was centered around practical demonstration, drills, and evolutions, located at Chester Valley Golf Club's pool. Firefighters toured the facility and identified various "problem points" that this commercial facility had, including the pump room and chemicals. Then members saw how lifeguards and water rescue personnel responded to a variety of different situations, from an active drowning victim to a unconscious and submerged victim to spinal injuries, etc. and then had a chance to try out and practice some of the skills themselves.

The evening then concluded with a fun game of water polo and in water basketball.

Special thanks to Mike Schon for coordinating and leading this drill, and Lt. Joe Whisler from St. 53 and Glen Morgan for assisting with instruction and evolutions.

A big thank you also goes to Jay Schiller and his pool staff at Chester Valley for donating the pool and personal time to make this drill happen.

Engine 5-5 Heads Off For Some Much Needed Updates
Monday, July 26, 2010
-
Engine 5-5 is off to Guardian Fire Apparatus for some much needed work. Our aging pumper/tanker will be out of service for approximately 2-3 months as it undergoes a "refurbishment" process, which will include body, engine, and pump work, new paint from the metal up, a new electrical system, new LED warning lights, and minor cab work. This refurb will help maintain our fleet by giving Engine 5-5 an extra estimated 8 to 15 years of life by saving maintenance and safety costs for the department's overall long term strategy.

Be sure to stop back every now and then, as we will put pictures and update the status of Engine 5-5's work as it progresses.
